Vancouver Couple Sacrifices Vacation to Help Relief Efforts in Philippines

on Nov 8th, 2013 the strongest tropical Typhoon (Haiyan) ever recorded struck and completely destroyed parts of the Philippines. All that remained after the storm was rubble, the burden of rebuilding and the surviving victims. Secluded areas such as the Calamian Islands of northern Palawan (Coron) are hit especially hard as they are separated from the mainland and help will take time to arrive. The survivors desperately plead out to the world for basic necessities such as water, food, and shelter.

A Vancouver couple took it upon themselves to help the victims in the Philippines. Jenn and Nils planned a vacation to the Philippines months ago. However, in light of the recent disaster, they decided to go anyways; except as volunteers.

To further support their mission to the Philippines, Jenn and Nils turned to Canadian crowdfunding platform Fundrazr to fundraise for supplies. In a little over a week, they were able to raise almost $6,000 from 45 contributors towards the cause; they even received a $1,000 donation from an anonymous donor.

Jenn and Nils plan to turn all the donation into various supplies such as canned food, rice, and tools and distribute it through liaising with local groups such as tour operators, boat charters, and various NGOs. Their goal is to save immediate lives as well as help the community rebuild and recover.

Many will ask, “who are Jenna and Nils? Are they some kind of celebrity or powerful people?” However, Jenn and Nils are everyday people just like you and I. Nils is a firefighter and first responder, while Jenn is a senior financial manager. The only thing they perhaps differ from everyone is the compassion they hold for people in need and the resolve to do something about it.
